As far as i know, no recompose is needed for any pool changes, unless you have modified or updated your master image.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the update.  Unfortunately I'm pretty much out of direct steps to address the crash.  I can see in the latest logs that you have updated the drivers, but it still crashed in exactly the same place.

A few quick observations and indirect approaches in case they are useful:

- Your VM is configured for a Windows Vista x64 guest, but its name suggests that it's Windows 7 x64.  If it really is Windows 7 x64, you should probably go into VM> Settings> Options, and under Guest Operating System, choose Version: Windows 7 x64.  It's unlikely that this will affect the graphics crash, but it's generally best to ensure the right guest OS is chosen anyway.

- If your VM does not need high-performance 3D graphics, you might be able to circumvent the problem by disabling hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in VM> Settings> Hardware> Display, uncheck Accelerate 3D graphics.

- If the crash occurs at seemingly-arbitrary times after the VM boots, it might be a 3D graphical screensaver inside the guest which is causing the problem... (?).  If so, try disabling the guest OS's screen saver.

Good luck!

Not sure which VMware product I need

I have inherited an old legacy, custom program written in Fox Pro, running on Windows Server 2003, on an ancient box. The clients run on XP with undocumented uses of obsolete ODBC drivers, various harcoded mappings and substs, etc. Even though the company is closing, I need to keep it running for audit purposes. It is an old accounting program; no fancy graphics or special  needs.

My plan was to to use eSXi and load both the Windows Server and the client XP as two virtual machines, running a virtual network. The two part time users would log into the client using LogMeIn, execute the programs on the client using the data and program from the server.

I do not know what VMware program I need. It appears eSXi does not support running a client on the same box as the server.

Where do I find out what I need?  What is the difference beween the various flavors of the hypervisor 5.01 "i", "u", etc.?

Thanks,

Rick

James,

The first message is without a doubt coming from VMware Fusion however I just searched the system log and there were occurrences of the second mesage prior to installing the Tech Preview so while the starting of the VMware Fusion TP has that message directly after Fusion initialized its virtual network infrastructure there is something else wrong and I'll have to investigate that.  Sorry for not searching for prior occurrences first.

Thanks!  My pleasure.

Now on a HP Proliant ML350 G5 with 10GB RAM

1)  Installed TP on Windows Server 2012 and created a VM of Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Server which I am presently "upgrading" to an Ubuntu-Desktop GUI.  Before booting into the GUI I have installed VMware-Tools in the command line server enviroment and enabled timesync.

2) I partitoned the Proliant so I will install Ubuntu 13.04 Server (for stability) and use WS 9.0.2 to created some VM's - copy them  to the Windows partition  and and see how the  Virtual Machine upgrade plrocess works (or not as somebody else posted).

My experience with last years TP is that I found it difficult to run into bugs so I need some assitance in what scenarios to test.

Nexus 1000v and Dell m1000e, m610 blades, 2 cisco switch blades in A1 and A2

Hello,

This is probably a question for cisco, but I find lots of answers to these types of questions here so I thought I'd start here first.  I have recently installed the nexus 1000v in a lab, in a dell m1000e chassis with four m610 blades running vsphere 5.1.  After the pain of installing it and seeing everything working well enough, I went to search for best practices.  Each blade has just the 2 LAN on motherboard ports.  They are all members of the nexus 1000v (so 8 vmnics) port profile for uplinks.  In the Nexus 1000v their port profile sets them for channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning.  I'm reading it is better to use LACP.  Here is my question that has me a little confused: would I put all the internal ports on the switch blades (G1/0/1, G2/0/1, G1/0/2, G2/0/2, etc for all 8) in to the same channel group?  Or would each pair of ports (G1/0/1 and G2/0/1) for each blade be in their own group?  To my understanding, LACP can have a max of 8?  So if the chassis were fully populated, that'd be 32 ports, so it seems it wouldn't work?  Looks to me like the Nexus 1000v tucked the pairs of vmnics (vmnic0 and vmnic1) in to their own channel groups, so that seems to make more sense that I'd have 4 port channels on the physical switch blades, for each host.  I might have made this a confusing question, so feel free to ask for clarification.  Configs are on a classified system, but I can do my best to post them without naughty info.

Woody,

No worries! Thank you very much for taking the time to check up on that, as well as taking the time to report the issues in the first place.

Re: Running workflow not getting updated configuration element attribute value

I am not affiliated with VMWare(I'm just a partner on the same boat so I'm not sure how definitive my answer will be but I will try my best to help!), but hopefully this helps:

I came across a similar issue when I was trying to change some attributes for a VM under vCD (I have a solution for non-VCD after). Once I changed them, I needed to access the new values in the same workflow. However, I was still stuck with the old values. I found out that these values are indeed cached from the point you first assign them into a variable. There are indeed calls up update the internal state.

To update a vApp, you can use the following:

System.getModule("com.vmware.library.vCloud.operation").updateInternalStateVApp(targetEntityArg) ;

To update a vm (and man it starts getting tricky here because it works sometimes, and other times you need to call another update function), do the following:

System.getModule("com.vmware.library.vCloud.operation").updateInternalStateVM(targetEntityArg) ;

I learned this from an example posted in their vcd notifications package...

If you are looking to do it under vSphere, not vCD, you will have to call the get-VM or get-view [obj] command again for it to regrab the data.

Note that doing so in both VCD and VSphere do seem to take a consdierable amount of load...

Hope this helps.

Re: Rename cluster in N1KV Enviroment

There is no impact to renaming a cluster. The data center is specified during the 1000v installation to denote where the VDS object lives (since they are defined at the DC layer).

Shares are a weighted percentage value. Thus, 10% of 10Gb is obviously larger than 10% of 1Gb, but identical percentages.

I'd first examine the array to ensure that access to the spindles is optimal before working attempting to tweak advanced network configuration values - these are typically fine to be left at default unless you have an edge case that demands an exception (rare).

Raid type, storage grouping, LUN placement, etc. all have great impact on overall performance. This is a good tool for SWAG estimates http://www.wesworld.net/raidcalculator.html

esxi would require a "ram device" that presents as storage.

To my knowledge no such thing exists. However functionally I do not

see how it is much different from using a local SSD disk in each view

You should have at least 20 kbps per endpoint available for bandwidth up to the server.

Windows + Space doesn't work as expect when Command + Space is used on OS X

$

Since Windows 8, Microsoft has added another official keyboard layout switching shortcut, Windows + Space. I am Thai who also uses Command + Space on the OS X for keyboard layout switching between US to Thai layout. These two shortcuts conflict on VMware Fusion and the Mac shortcut always win.

Here are steps for producing this behavior:

1. Upgrade the Windows 8 box to Hardware number 9 or 10.

2. Upgrade all VMware tool.

3. Click inside the Windows 8 box.

4. Press Command + Space to switch the keyboard layout.

Expected result:

Keyboard layout on Windows 8 box is switched. (Mac keyboard layout may be switched, this is OK.)

Actual result:

Mac keyboard layout is switched. Windows box shows Metro home screen and no keyboard layout is switched.

Hope you can fix it soon.

if you use parallels or vmware fusion you can use unity mode to open vsphere client like a native mac app.

Darius, we think alike.  Based upon your good troubleshooting about it being video related, I looked for any setting related to video.  I saw the 3D graphics item and unchecked that after the previous failure.  So far so good.   I'll keep the VM running and have my fingers crossed.  After a few hours, things are looking good.

Thanks.

Re: Switches - best bang for the buck?

I wouldn't recommend upgrading switches just to get 9216 MTU support unless you have a specific requirement for 9216. (Interested to hear BTW).

If I am correct in assuming the reason for this is to improve performance for things like vMotion and IP Storage, then I would recommend you review the two below example architectural decisions I have written so you can understand the pros and cons of Jumbo (if you dont already).

The same decisions also apply to vMotion traffic.

Hope that helps save you some money you can invest in other areas of your infrastructure.

Re: Install Fails - Error UI Timed out ...

Solution that works for ANY VMWare installer :

1. start a DOS box ( by typing "cmd" in the Start button text field for example )

2. make a temp directory, for example, c:/temp

3. change directory to where you've downloaded VMWare Installer

4. extract the .msi installer from the .exe by running the following command in DOS

             cmd /C  <your VMWare Installer name>.exe -e c:/temp

5. when the command returns, you should see a "VMware Workstation.msi" and *.cab in c:/temp

6. Run VMware Workstation.msi by double clicking on it in Windows Explorer, or use msiexec

Done
